NORCET 11 Mains Safe Score 2026: How Many Marks Are Enough to Get Selected

You walked out of the NORCET 11 Mains on 30 September 2026 with a rough idea of your attempts. Now you want one number: how many marks are enough.

The honest answer has two parts, and most aspirants only know the first one.

Part One: The Qualifying Bar

AIIMS sets a minimum percentage you must score simply to be considered:

Part Two: The Part Nobody Tells You

Selection is decided by rank, not by percentage.

AIIMS fills a fixed number of posts. It ranks every qualified candidate in each category and goes down the list until the posts are filled. The mark at which the list runs out is the real cutoff, and it moves every cycle depending on:

• how many vacancies the participating institutes have released
• how difficult the paper was
• how tightly scores cluster in the middle of the distribution

This is why an aspirant can score 95 out of 160 as UR, comfortably above the 80-mark qualifying bar, and still not be selected. The 80 was never the target.

So What Is a Genuinely Safe Score

Work in bands rather than a single number:

• Qualifying zone: at or just above your category percentage. You are in the count, but nothing is secure.
• Competitive zone: clearly above the qualifying bar, in the range where selection has historically happened for your category. This is where most selections come from.
• Comfortable zone: high enough that even an unfavourable vacancy count or a tie-break does not threaten you.

NPrep's historical tracking across earlier NORCET cycles put comfortable Prelims targets at roughly 150 and above out of 200 for UR, 140 and above for OBC, 130 and above for SC, and 125 and above for ST. The Mains is a different paper on a different scale, which is exactly why the cycle-specific bands need the actual paper before they mean anything.

Why the Mains Distribution Is Tighter

The Prelims has 200 questions including general knowledge and aptitude, which spreads candidates out. The Mains has 160 questions, all nursing, all case-based, in 180 minutes.

Three consequences:

1. Scores bunch up. Everyone sitting this paper already cleared a 95th percentile filter. The weak candidates are gone.
2. Small mark gaps become big rank gaps. Two marks can be hundreds of ranks when thousands of candidates sit within a narrow band.
3. Negative marking decides more than knowledge. At 1/3 per wrong answer, a clean 120 beats a reckless 135 with 45 wrong attempts.

That last point is worth sitting with. On a tightly clustered paper, accuracy is the differentiator, not coverage.

Estimating Your Own Score Honestly

If you want a rough self-assessment before the official scorecard:

1. Count the questions you are certain about. These are your safe marks.
2. Count the ones you attempted with reasoned elimination. Historically these run around 60 to 70% accuracy for well-prepared candidates.
3. Count blind guesses. Assume roughly a quarter are right, and subtract 1/3 for each wrong one. Most blind guessing is close to mark-neutral at best.
4. Apply the formula: correct answers minus one third of wrong answers.

Then add a margin of error of several marks in either direction, because memory-based recall of your own paper is less accurate than you think.

A Word on Memory-Based Answer Keys

AIIMS does not release an official question paper or answer key for NORCET. Every paper and key circulating after the exam is memory-based, reconstructed from what candidates recall once they leave the hall.

They are useful for a rough estimate and for understanding the paper's shape. They are not reliable enough to conclude that you have or have not been selected. Every cycle, candidates talk themselves into despair or complacency over a key that later turns out to contain errors.
