What Makes Up the AIIMS Nursing Officer Salary?

A central government salary is basic pay plus allowances, minus deductions. The components:

Basic pay. Set by Level 7 of the pay matrix. It increases with annual increments and with each pay commission revision.

Dearness Allowance (DA). A percentage of basic pay, revised by the government periodically to offset inflation. This is the component that changes most often.

House Rent Allowance (HRA). Calculated as a percentage of basic pay, and the percentage depends on the classification of your posting city. X, Y and Z city classes attract different rates. This is the main reason two Nursing Officers on identical basic pay take home different amounts.

Transport Allowance (TA). Also varies by city class, with DA applied on top.

Nursing-specific allowances. Nursing staff in central government hospitals are eligible for allowances tied to the role, such as a nursing allowance and, where applicable, a uniform or washing allowance. Applicability and rates follow the orders in force.

Deductions. NPS contribution, professional tax where applicable, income tax, and any institute-specific deductions.

Why Do In-Hand Salary Figures Differ So Much Online?

Search for AIIMS Nursing Officer salary and you will find numbers ranging widely. The spread is usually explained by one of these:

  • City class. HRA differs substantially between a metro and a smaller city.
  • DA at the time of writing. DA is revised periodically, so older articles understate current figures.
  • Gross versus in-hand. Many sources quote gross and omit NPS and tax.
  • Allowances included or excluded. Nursing-specific allowances are sometimes left out.

Treat any single in-hand number as an estimate for one specific city at one specific point in time. Your appointment letter is the only figure that applies to you.

What Is the Career Progression for an AIIMS Nursing Officer?

A Nursing Officer post is an entry into a structured central government career path, not a terminal position. The typical progression runs:

Nursing Officer → Senior Nursing Officer → Assistant Nursing Superintendent → Deputy Nursing Superintendent → Nursing Superintendent → Chief Nursing Officer

Progression depends on service length, vacancies and departmental promotion rules at your institute.

Beyond pay, the post carries the benefits attached to central government service: job security, NPS, leave entitlements, medical facilities and pension-linked benefits as applicable.

What Does an AIIMS Nursing Officer Actually Do?

The role is clinical, and the day-to-day reflects the department you are posted to:

  • Direct patient care and monitoring
  • Medication administration and documentation
  • Assisting in procedures and operating theatre support where posted
  • Infection control and ward management
  • Patient and attendant education
  • Emergency and critical care support in relevant departments

Posting across departments and rotating shifts are normal in a tertiary care hospital.

How Does AIIMS Nursing Officer Pay Compare With Other Exams?

AIIMS is one of several central recruiters for nursing officer posts. ESIC, RRB, PGIMER, RML and state health services recruit for similar roles, and pay levels are broadly comparable within central service, with differences in allowances, posting patterns and progression.
