GNM Nursing course guide: subjects, jobs and next steps
General Nursing and Midwifery (GNM) is a three-year diploma recognised by the Indian Nursing Council. This guide covers what you study each year, which jobs a GNM qualification opens, and how it compares with B.Sc Nursing.
GNM course structure
The course runs three years. The 1st and 2nd years are theory with clinical postings; the 3rd year is split into Part I (midwifery and community health) and Part II, a supervised internship with short courses in education, research and ward management.

Jobs after GNM
With State Nursing Council registration, GNM nurses work as staff nurses in government and private hospitals. Many state staff nurse recruitments accept a GNM diploma directly, and AIIMS NORCET accepts it with two years of experience in a hospital of at least 50 beds. Check each notification for the exact rule.
The degree route after GNM
A two-year Post Basic B.Sc Nursing turns a GNM diploma into a degree. That makes you eligible for NORCET without the experience condition and, later, for M.Sc Nursing.
