NORCET 11 AIR 484: Only 136 Questions Attempted, Still Topped

87.5% accuracy, six months of preparation, and a deliberate decision to leave 24 questions blank in the Mains. Accuracy did the work that volume usually gets credit for.

NORCET 11 AIR 484: Only 136 Questions Attempted, Still Topped

Quick answer: Nandini Das secured All India Rank 484 in NORCET 11 Mains 2026 on her first attempt, from AIIMS Kalyani. She practised 31,600 questions in roughly six months at 87.5% accuracy — the highest in this cohort — and in the Mains itself she attempted only 136 questions, leaving the rest deliberately blank.

The number that makes this story different

Most topper interviews lead with attempts. Hers leads with restraint.

Questions attempted in Mains136
Estimated negatives18 to 19
Test series accuracy87.5%

Her reasoning is one sentence:

By attempting more, mine used to go wrong more.

She knew her own failure mode and built her exam strategy around it rather than around a target attempt count. If you convert unknowns into guesses, every extra attempt is negative expected value — and she had the test-series data to know that about herself.

This is the same lesson Anjali Joshi at AIR 159 learned by missing the Prelims cut-off by 0.3 marks. Nandini learned it before it cost her anything.

Knowing about NORCET since class 11

An unusually long runway, and it started with a teacher.

Her class 11 physics teacher told her a post called NORCET existed, that it carried respect and a good salary. She then prepared for NEET, gave it once, did not get through, and cleared the AIIMS BSc entrance on her first attempt instead.

From early in her second year she was already reading PR Yadav and Target High — with no coaching at all — and making proper notes from college teaching.

Seven to eight revisions

The compounding effect of that early start:

I revised those two books seven to eight times, possibly more, before NORCET.

When she joined NPrep and was asked what percentage of her theory was done, she estimated 60 to 70%. That is a strong base to buy question practice on top of, and it explains how six months of focused work produced 31,600 questions — she was not learning the material for the first time.

Her parents told her to start testing immediately

A small exchange with a big consequence.

Her instinct was to wait. She assumed her marks would be low because she had not studied enough yet — the same instinct that kept Neha at AIR 408 away from the test series for months.

Her parents disagreed:

Give the tests anyway, because it builds the habit and the time management, and the marks will climb on their own.

So she started on day one. The pattern that followed:

  • First month: a 100-mark daily test
  • After that: alternating the 160-mark Mains format with the 100-mark one

Two people, the same hesitation, opposite outcomes. The difference was somebody telling her the score was not the point yet.

The mistake notebook that logs correct answers

Her version has a twist most candidates miss.

The standard part: every wrong answer noted and revised later.

The unusual part: she also noted questions she got right but felt doubtful about — where she had eliminated her way to the answer rather than actually known it.

That is a genuinely smart distinction. A correct answer reached by elimination is a near miss with a good outcome, and it will not be correct next time if the options change. Logging those converts luck into knowledge.

Why the analysis mattered on a four-option paper

Her reason for valuing the rationales is specific to how NORCET 11 was set:

In Mains, among four options, it was difficult even to differentiate.

So the explanation of why each of the other three options is wrong was the operative part — not the confirmation of the right one. On a paper where two options are defensible, knowing why the second-best fails is the whole skill.

Prelims was her weak half

An honest asymmetry worth naming, because it is common and rarely discussed.

In NPrep's test series her Prelims marks ran lower than her Mains marks, which she attributes to GK. It resolved by August and September, when her Prelims ranks improved too.

She also separately placed 62 in an MSc entrance the same year, but did not take admission, partly over NOC complications.

Her advice: do not wait for 100% theory

Do not wait for 100% theory before starting, because that takes too long.

Her sequence: do a part of the theory, then its Question Bank, and bring in daily tests once about 50% is done — which is almost exactly what Arbaz at AIR 50 independently recommends.

What to take from AIR 484

  1. Accuracy beats attempts if guessing is your weakness. Know which you are.
  2. Start testing before you feel ready. The habit is the point, not the score.
  3. Log the correct answers you were unsure of. They are tomorrow's wrong ones.
  4. Study why the other three options fail, not just why one succeeds.
  5. 50% theory is enough to start daily tests. Waiting for 100% wastes the window.

Frequently asked questions

What rank did Nandini Das get in NORCET 11? All India Rank 484 in NORCET 11 Mains 2026, on her first attempt.

How many questions should you attempt in NORCET Mains? There is no fixed number. She attempted only 136 with an estimated 18 to 19 negatives, because she knew from her test series data that attempting more made her accuracy fall. Her test series accuracy was 87.5%.

Should you start giving mock tests before your syllabus is ready? Her parents advised her to start immediately, on the basis that early tests build the habit and time management, and the marks climb on their own. She began from day one with a 100-mark daily test.

What should go in a NORCET mistake notebook? Wrong answers, plus the questions you got right but felt doubtful about — the ones reached by elimination rather than knowledge.

How much theory should be done before starting daily tests? She advises against waiting for 100%. Do a part of the theory, then its Question Bank, and bring in daily tests once around 50% is complete.
