NORCET Mains Strategy: 160 MCQs in 180 Minutes | NPrep
How to handle NORCET Stage II: four locked 45-minute sections, when to guess under minus one third marking, and the score each rank needed.

NORCET Mains (Stage II) is a 180-minute computer-based test of 160 case-based MCQs, split into 4 locked sections of 40 questions and 45 minutes each, with minus one third of a mark for each wrong answer. It alone decides your All India Rank, so the strategy is simple: answer accurately inside each 45-minute window, and guess only after ruling out at least one option.
Updated 29 October 2026. Pattern and rules are from AIIMS Notice 103/2026 (clause 31). Score data is from AIIMS Stage II Result Notifications 57/2025, 233/2025, 160/2026 and 287/2026.

How are the NORCET Mains sections timed?
Each of the 4 sections opens on its own and stays open for exactly 45 minutes. When the time ends, the next section opens automatically and the previous one never comes back. The paper submits itself after 180 minutes. You cannot move time between sections.
That gives you 67.5 seconds per question. Spending 4 minutes on one hard case costs you three or four easier questions later in the same section.
A section plan that fits the clock:
- First pass, about 30 minutes: answer everything you know. Mark anything that needs more than a minute.
- Second pass, about 12 minutes: return to marked questions and work through the case details.
- Last 3 minutes: decide on the remaining marked questions using the guessing rule below.
When should you guess in NORCET Mains?
With four options and minus one third per wrong answer, a blind guess is worth nothing on average:
- Blind guess (4 options left): 1/4 × (+1) + 3/4 × (−1/3) = 0.
- One option ruled out (3 left): 1/3 × (+1) + 2/3 × (−1/3) = +1/9 mark on average.
- Two options ruled out (2 left): 1/2 × (+1) + 1/2 × (−1/3) = +1/3 mark on average.
So skip pure guesses, and answer once you can rule out at least one option with a real reason.
There is a second reason to avoid careless answers. Under NORCET 11 rules, the first tie-breaker is the number of wrong answers in Stage II: of two candidates with equal marks, the one with fewer wrong answers ranks higher.
What score should you aim for in NORCET Mains?
The score needed for a given rank changes with the paper. NPrep read every rank in the last four AIIMS results:
| Rank | NORCET 8 | NORCET 9 | NORCET 10 | NORCET 11 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| AIR 100 | 66.250% | 68.542% | 79.167% | 73.125% |
| AIR 1,000 | 60.000% | 61.875% | 73.750% | 65.417% |
| AIR 2,500 | 56.042% | 58.333% | 70.208% | 61.250% |
A practical target for NORCET 12 is 70% or more in full-length Mains mocks, about 112 of 160. That would have placed you near or inside the top 2,500 in all four cycles. See the full NORCET marks vs rank tables.
How do you prepare for case-based questions?
Notice 103/2026 describes Stage II as focused on case scenario-based questions that test nursing skills competency. That means reading a patient situation and choosing the right nursing action, not recalling a definition.
- Learn priorities, not lists. For each system, know what you assess first, what you report immediately and what you do next.
- Practise reading long stems fast. Find the question at the end of the stem first, then read the case with that question in mind.
- Revise the biggest subjects first. Medical-Surgical Nursing is the largest single subject in past papers; follow it with Obstetrics and Gynaecological Nursing, Paediatric Nursing and Community Health Nursing.
- Use previous year papers. Our NORCET previous year question papers show how cases are framed.
How should you use the 20 days between Prelims and Mains?
In NORCET 12, Stage I is on 10 April 2027, its result on 21 April and Stage II on 30 April. Mains preparation cannot wait for the Prelims result.
- Before Prelims: build subject depth and do at least one timed 4 × 45 minute mock a week.
- 10 to 21 April: keep revising nursing subjects; GK and aptitude do not appear in Mains.
- 21 to 30 April: sit 3 to 4 full Mains mocks under exam timing and review every wrong answer.
What should you do on the day of NORCET Mains?
- Carry your admit card and a valid photo ID. AIIMS issued the NORCET 11 Stage II admit card 4 days before the exam and the city details 7 days before.
- Keep to the section plan. When a section ends, let it go and start the next one fresh.
- Do not chase every last question. One wrong answer costs one third of a mark and can lose a tie-break.
