NORCET 11 AIR 20: Ayushi Prepared on a Borrowed Phone With No Laptop
No laptop, no phone of her own, patchy village network, and a family that could not afford a batch. She joined on scholarship and finished at AIR 20.

Quick answer: Ayushi Rakhasiya secured All India Rank 20 in NORCET 11 Mains 2026 from a village in Gujarat. She had no laptop and no phone of her own, borrowing her father's — which was not even a 5G device — on a patchy village network. She joined NPrep on a scholarship because her family could not afford a batch, and practised roughly 14,000 questions. She scored 99.73 in the Prelims.
The equipment she did not have
Stated without drama, which makes it land harder:
I did not have a laptop and I did not even have my own phone.
She borrowed one from her father. It was not a 5G device. Being in a village, connectivity was a recurring problem throughout.
She joined through the scholarship specifically because the family did not have money for a batch. Her own assessment of that decision: taking it turned out well.
If your objection to starting is that your setup is not good enough, this is AIR 20 on a borrowed, non-5G phone.
Starting in third year
The quiet advantage in her story is not equipment. It is runway.
She connected with NPrep in her third year — well before most candidates begin thinking about the exam. By the time of the result she had solved roughly 14,000 questions, accumulated steadily from third year onward rather than crammed into a final sprint.
The same pattern shows up in Arbaz at AIR 50, who started during his internship, and Nandini Das at AIR 484, who was reading from second year. Early starts are doing a lot of work across this cohort.
She did not think she had cleared
I did not think I would pass. And I passed anyway.
Her Prelims score was 99.73, which was already a strong signal, but the expectation gap stayed.
And the detail that gives the moment its weight: at the moment of the result, her parents were not at home. They had gone to the fields and she could not reach them to tell them. Her father farms.
Using an older edition, deliberately
An unusually practical decision that cuts against the instinct to always have the newest material.
She used the guide at Edition Five rather than Edition Six, and was explicit about why: she did not have the time to go through the newer one.
The interviewer's remark is the useful part — Edition Five was enough to get her selected.
Having the latest material matters less than having finished the material you have. Sabha at AIR 135 made the same call in reverse, using Edition Six features precisely because she did have time.
What she actually studied
- Theory classes first. Asked what she liked best, her immediate answer was the theory classes, followed by Nashta.
- Faculty: Himmat Sir, specifically for Nursing Foundation.
- Language: she is more comfortable in Gujarati and finds Hindi somewhat difficult to speak. It did not prevent the result.
That last point matters for a large number of aspirants. Anet at AIR 118, from Kerala, worked around the same barrier from Malayalam.
How she read the Mains paper
Her description of the paper's structure is one of the clearest in this set:
Around 10 to 12 questions were at an advanced level. The rest tested basic concepts drawn from normal theory.
The worked example she gave, on electrolyte imbalance: the paper does not ask you to recall a fact. It asks the concept itself — what symptoms would appear, and what the imbalance would be.
Her conclusion is that theory has to be strong in that specific, applied way. Her theory was described in the interview as very strong.
This is the practical reason volume alone does not produce a rank. The questions are about whether you can run a concept forward, not whether you have seen it.
What to take from AIR 20
- A borrowed phone is enough. It produced AIR 20.
- Start in third year if you can. Runway beats intensity.
- Finishing older material beats owning newer material.
- Your medium of comfort is not a barrier. Gujarati-first, AIR 20.
- Study theory to be applied, not recalled. Ten to twelve questions are advanced; the rest reward concept clarity.
