NORCET 11 AIR 106: Swagata Followed the Test Series Manual Literally

Quick answer: Swagata Chatterjee secured All India Rank 106 in NORCET 11 Mains 2026, improving from rank 239 in NORCET 10. From West Bengal, she had already attempted NORCET 5, 6 and 10, and was in the second year of her MSc while preparing. She practised more than 21,000 questions. Her distinguishing trait is that she followed the test series manual exactly as written.

Four attempts, and the gap she finally named

AttemptOutcome
NORCET 5 and 6After her BSc in 2022
NORCET 8 and 9Skipped — starting her MSc
NORCET 10Rank 239

Her own diagnosis of what had been missing is specific:

My theory was complete going into NORCET 10. My MCQ practice was not.

So after the NORCET 10 result she took the test series, identified her weak points through MCQs rather than guesswork, and then revised them repeatedly, made notes on them, and watched videos on them.

That ordering matters: the questions told her what was weak, and only then did she apply theory to it. Most candidates guess at their weak areas and are often wrong.

The manual, followed literally

When she bought the test series she was given a manual. Her distinguishing behaviour is that she simply did what it said, in order:

  1. Clear your topics first
  2. Then go to the Question Bank for topics you have doubts in
  3. Score a minimum of roughly 50 to 60% there
  4. Only then move to the test series
  5. Only after hitting that percentage in the test series, move to NORCET PYQs

Asked what she would tell freshers and repeaters, her answer was to follow that same manual, because it is step by step and easy.

There is something quietly instructive here. A detailed sequence existed, most people improvise around it, and she did not.

A mock every single day, then analysis

From the day she bought the test series she gave one mock test every day without exception, then analysed it.

The mistake book was new this cycle — she had not kept one for NORCET 10. Anything new she learned went into it, and the questions she got wrong clustered there.

The result of that habit is the clearest single-subject turnaround in this cohort: OBG, which she names as a very weak point, became a strong subject by the end.

The numbers

Question Bank7,375 at 76.9% accuracy
Test series13,966
Total21,000+

Her accuracy in the main exam matched her Question Bank accuracy — which is a quietly reassuring data point for anyone wondering whether practice accuracy transfers.

What she valued in the Question Bank: the topic-wise division, which let her go straight to a problem topic rather than searching for it.

Why the test series mattered for pattern, not just content

Having last sat the exam years earlier, she was not used to the current pattern — and Prelims and Mains have different question patterns.

She used the test series to practise three things that are not content at all:

  • Completing within the time limit
  • Reading every question regardless of length
  • Concentrating across a long sitting

On the rationales, she highlighted that explanations are given even for the wrong options — saying why not this one. Over time, she says, she learned how she needed to think when she saw a question.

And a small, very practical habit: when she did not feel like reading an explanation, she opened the picture instead, on the view that an image leaves an imprint that returns during the exam. The same boredom workaround Sabha at AIR 135 describes.

Balancing an MSc, duty and preparation

Around 8 to 10 hours of study, which she acknowledges was not always possible but was mostly achieved.

How: she studied after duty, and her friends actively covered for her so she could.

That last detail deserves saying out loud. Several toppers in this set had someone absorbing load for them — parents, siblings, colleagues. It is part of the method, not a footnote.

Her closing line:

Give yourself one year and life will give back all the years to you.

She stopped everything else that year and focused only on her MSc and NORCET.

What to take from AIR 106

  1. Find weak areas through MCQs, not by guessing.
  2. If a manual exists, follow it in order. The sequence is the product.
  3. Keep a mistake book. It turned her weakest subject into a strong one.
  4. Practise the non-content skills: timing, reading fully, concentrating for hours.
  5. Accept help. Her friends covering duty was part of how this worked.

Frequently asked questions

What rank did Swagata Chatterjee get in NORCET 11? All India Rank 106 in NORCET 11 Mains 2026, improving from rank 239 in NORCET 10.

What is the correct order to use a NORCET test series? Her manual-based sequence: clear your topics, then use the Question Bank on doubtful topics until you score roughly 50 to 60%, then move to the test series, and only after hitting that percentage move to NORCET PYQs.

Can you prepare for NORCET while doing an MSc? Yes. She was in the second year of her MSc, studied 8 to 10 hours after duty, and had friends cover for her to make it possible.

Does your practice accuracy carry into the real NORCET exam? In her case yes — her accuracy in the main exam matched her Question Bank accuracy of 76.9%.

How do you turn a weak subject into a strong one? She kept a mistake book for the first time in this cycle, logging everything new she learned and every question she got wrong. OBG, which she names as a very weak point, became a strong subject by the end.
