CHO Eligibility Criteria (2026): Qualification, Age Limit, CCH/CPCH & State-Wise Rules
If you’ve been preparing for CHO/MLHP exams, you’ve probably noticed one confusing truth: there is no single “one-size-fits-all” eligibility rule for CHO across India. CHO recruitment runs under the Health & Wellness Centre (HWC) / AAM (Ayushman Arogya Mandir) ecosystem, but each State NHM issues its own notification, and the exact eligibility (degree, bridge certificate, registration, age band, local rules) can change cycle-to-cycle.
So instead of giving you generic, half-correct criteria, this guide does two things:
-
Explains the core national framework behind CHO/MLHP eligibility
-
Shows state-wise verified eligibility examples from official/notification PDFs we could access online
Important note: Always treat your state’s latest PDF notification as final. This blog gives you a reliable base + real examples from recent/known notifications to reduce confusion.
What “Eligibility” Really Means in CHO Recruitment
For most states, eligibility is checked in 4 buckets:
1) Your Base Qualification (Nursing / AYUSH / other)
States typically hire CHOs from:
-
B.Sc Nursing / Post Basic B.Sc Nursing
-
In some states/cycles: GNM
-
In some states/cycles: AYUSH (BAMS / BUMS / BHMS etc.)
The “who is allowed” depends on state policy and the notification.
2) Bridge Certificate Requirement (CCH/CPCH/CCHN)
This is where most aspirants get rejected.
Many states require a Community Health certificate such as:
-
CCHN (Certificate in Community Health for Nurses)
-
CPCH (Certificate Programme in Community Health)
-
A bridge/integrated community health component inside the Nursing curriculum
The national CHO/MLHP ecosystem and related guidance notes are hosted under NHM’s CHO resource section.
3) Nursing Council / Professional Registration
Even if you have the degree, most states require:
-
Registration with State Nursing Council
-
Some states allow other-state registration first, but require transfer/registration within a deadline (example below).
4) Age Limit + Relaxations
Age bands vary a lot:
-
Some states keep it tight (example: Punjab had 18-37 in that cycle)
-
Some keep a wider window (example: UP 21-40 in that cycle)
The Most Common “Hidden” Eligibility Traps (Read This Carefully)
Aspirants lose selection not because they are “not eligible”, but because they miss a technical line like:
-
“Integrated CCHN only” (not standalone certificate)
-
Eligible only from a certain batch year onward
-
Punjabi/Hindi/local language subject requirement
-
Must register in state nursing council within X days of joining
-
Already working as CHO = not eligible to apply again (in that cycle/state)
UP’s CHO notification is a perfect example of how specific these rules can be.
State-Wise Eligibility Comparison
Below is a clean snapshot of eligibility rules taken directly from accessible recruitment PDFs/official docs.
| State | Minimum Qualification | Bridge/Community Health Certificate | Council Registration | Age Range (Approx) | GNM Eligibility | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Uttar Pradesh | GNM / B.Sc / PB B.Sc Nursing | CCH/Certificate in Community Health preferred | Registered with State Nursing Council | 21-40 (Cat. relaxations) | Yes (with CCH requirement) | Must register in state council |
| Bihar | B.Sc / PB B.Sc Nursing / GNM + CCH | Mandatory CCH integrated or separate | Registered with any Nursing Council & submit BNRC within deadline | 21-42 (varies by cycle & category) | Yes (with CCH) | Must submit BNRC registration or affidavit |
| Madhya Pradesh | B.Sc / PB B.Sc / GNM / BAMS | Integrated CCH in nursing or direct CCCH paths | State or other council (domicile often required) | Typically 21-40 | Yes | Domicile often preferred |
| Rajasthan | B.Sc / PB B.Sc / GNM / BAMS | Implicit through nursing credentials; focus on community health readiness | Must have valid registration (Rajasthan Nursing/Board of Indian Medicine) | 21-40 (plus relaxations) | Yes | Experience not mandatory |
| Odisha | B.Sc / PB B.Sc Nursing (GNM less common) | Most notifications emphasise integrated curriculum or community training | Registration with Odisha Nursing Council | ~21-40 | No (in many cycles) | Priority to state council registration |
| Maharashtra | B.Sc / PB B.Sc / GNM | Bridge course CCH often expected in recruitment alerts | Maharashtra Nursing Council/Indian Couns | ~21-40 | Yes (with conditions) | Must upload valid council certificate |
| Gujarat | B.Sc / PB B.Sc / GNM | Community health readiness important | Registered with Gujarat Nursing Council | ~21-40 | Yes (with conditions) | Must meet state rules |
| Punjab | B.Sc / PB B.Sc / BAMS | CCH or community cert sometimes required | Registered with Punjab Nursing Council | ~18-37 (in some cycles) | Yes (with conditions) | Punjabi proficiency sometimes mentioned |
| Haryana | B.Sc / PB B.Sc / BAMS | Mandatory 6-month bridge/CHO/MLHP course + community component | Registered with Haryana Nursing/CIM Council | ~21-40 | Yes | BAMS route explicitly recognised |
| Chhattisgarh | B.Sc / PB B.Sc / GNM* | Often integrated CCH/community health focus | Registered with CH Nursing Council | ~21-40 | Yes (with conditions) | Emphasis on rural/tribal serving skills |
