Explanation

  • Proteins are large biomolecules made up of smaller units called amino acids.
  • The defining elements present in all amino acids, and therefore all proteins, are Carbon (C), Hydrogen (H), Oxygen (O), and Nitrogen (N).
  • The presence of Nitrogen is the key feature that distinguishes proteins from other macronutrients like carbohydrates and fats, which are primarily composed of C, H, and O.
  • On average, proteins contain about 16% nitrogen by weight.

Why Other Options Were Wrong

  • Option A: This option incorrectly omits Hydrogen. All organic molecules, including the amino acids that make up proteins, contain Hydrogen.
  • Option B: While some specific amino acids (methionine and cysteine) do contain Sulphur, it is not a universal component of all proteins. Nitrogen is the essential and defining element for a substance to be classified as a protein.
  • Option D: This option lists minerals (Calcium, Phosphorus, Iron) along with Carbon. These are not the primary building blocks of protein molecules. Some specialized proteins, called conjugated proteins, may bind to these elements (e.g., hemoglobin contains iron), but they are not part of the fundamental amino acid structure.

  • Recognize that Nitrogen ('N') is the key differentiator for proteins.
  • Scan the options to find the one that includes all four elements of 'CHON'.
  • Eliminate the other options: one is missing hydrogen, one incorrectly substitutes sulphur for the essential nitrogen, and one lists minerals instead of primary elements.
